What God wants from every believer is a commitment to follow Him and not compare ourselves with what others are doing. In John 21:20-22, Peter questioned Jesus about John’s future, and Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow Me.” When we focus on what others are doing, we lose sight of what we are called to do. Comparison stems from being preoccupied with our own self-worth. It diminishes our ability to be content with who God created us to be and reduces our ability to build relationships. A comparing spirit craves attention by wanting to be greater than others at any cost. Competition, anger and jealousy are the result. Living by comparison spells death to our God-given potential.
